Did you know, you can receive timely weather alerts on your mobile even without the internet! Yes, you can now receive weather alerts through short messaging service (SMS) directly to your mobile. This service was indeed started back in the year 2014 by The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to provide timely updates on extreme weather conditions such as cyclones in your area.
This service is free of cost to the general public and can be easily registered on the official IMD website.
How to register for weather alerts
Step 1: Visit https://rsmcnewdelhi.imd.gov.in/
Step 2: Scroll down the website below to find Register With Us or You can click this link directly https://rsmcnewdelhi.imd.gov.in/registration.php
Step 3: Click on the bottom and you will be redirected to the page where you should fill in the details.
Step 4: Fill the details such as name, address, city, state, district, occupation, mobile number, purpose of receiving SMS and email
Step 5: Submit the form. You will receive a message, “You have been Successfully Registered.”
That’s it! You can now receive timely weather alerts directly to your mobile via SMS. You will receive messages as shown in the picture below.
Apart from the general public, IMD also sends cyclone warnings through SMS to central and state disaster management agencies.
A similar SMS alerts service is also provided by Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad for fishermen to issue cyclonic warnings. They can register at INCOIS website to receive updates.
Farmers can also register for cyclone warnings via SMS through the Kisan Portal of the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India.
